Brewer-Porch Children's Center is a University of Alabama program (Tuscaloosa Campus); a Department within the College of Arts and Sciences. Brewer-Porch (BPCC) was established by the Alabama Legislature in 1970 to provide a model treatment program for Alabama’s special needs children, adolescents and their families. Treatment is based on an interdisciplinary approach with psychology, education, nursing, psychiatry, social work and counseling comprising the professions that impact each client’s treatment. All clients are provided individual services through directions from a program treatment team.
Brewer-Porch also provides experiences to graduate and undergraduate students in the area of childhood emotional disorders, autism, and childhood mental illnesses. University students assist in providing clinical services as they learn through supervised practice at the Center. Knowledge gained by the students and faculty is communicated to other students and the professional community. Services provided by the Center have a profound impact on the local community and State. Finally, research conducted at The Center has impacted on the knowledge base of the service population. The Center’s programs are closely linked to The University of Alabama’s three missions of Service, Teaching, and Research.
The programs namesake is for Albert Brewer, a former governor of Alabama, and Ralph Porch, a former legislator, and is located on 60 acres of land adjacent to the Tuscaloosa Veterans Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
